The identity of Europe is still a highly controversial topic. Almost everything related to this subject is up for discussion, including the role that the concept can play in the political community of Europe, as well as its origins, conditions, and contents. The discussion continues, and clarification is needed. Some see a clear notion of identity as the soul of Europe, without which the distant and hard-to-understand institutions of the Union would become a soulless machinery, forever alienating the citizens of the community and turning the European unification project into a questionable construct, a kind of bureaucratic monster that remains a foreign entity in the hearts and minds of Europeans. Others hope that the citizens of the Union will develop an identification with it in the not-too-distant future.
