That the Republicans play off Luise Otto Peters' ideal of femininity against the "equalizing feminists" of the new women's movement for the legitimization of their views does not tarnish this early women's rights advocate, who explicitly referred to the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen from the French Revolution. However, it shows that the title of our book could lead to misunderstandings. It does not construct a contradiction between the natural law-based claim to freedom and equality for all people and a naturally given femininity. It also does not oppose the revolutionary postulates with a programmatic femininity, whose alleged virtues—elevated to political principles—could have prevented the revolution from descending into terror.
