Through detailed case studies, the author explores the different meanings of physical violence for female adolescents. Two groups are distinguished in this context. Some girls engage in violence to gain something from it. They perceive themselves as strong, independent, and just when they use violence. Additionally, they receive recognition from a violent peer group for their actions, creating a sense of belonging. Other girls feel threatened by a hostile environment and use violence as a means of protection. Overwhelmed by their aggressive emotions, their actions reinforce and deepen a negative self-concept. The author explains the various motives and subjective gains of physical violence for female adolescents and clarifies their significance within the framework of family-learned interaction logics.
