This book examines, from a comparative perspective, a particularly troubling phenomenon in recent integration history: referendums in and about Europe. Among other things, the volume addresses the following questions: What are the arguments for and against direct democratic decisions in the integration process? Can European policy decisions be traced back to a democratic sovereign at all? And if so, to which one? How do European policy referendums differ in terms of debates and votes? With the recent British referendum, a new type of European policy referendum has emerged: the issue-independent no-confidence referendum. Will the British example set a precedent? Should we increasingly prepare for such offensive votes? What would this mean for the future of the EU? Is it at risk of failing because of this?.
