Democratic journalism systems primarily serve to make the eventfulness of global society more transparent. Efforts in European and North American journalism research encourage the pursuit of an overarching journalism as a prerequisite for better cohesion of research findings. Following an overview of existing ideas, original historical case studies on communication change are presented. This allows for the empirical stabilization of key theories for the reconstruction of journalism as a unity in difference to global society and as a framework for future research programs.
