Product details
The mobilization of voters through clientelist structures was a characteristic of the political regime of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in Mexico. With the party's defeat in the 2000 presidential elections and the alleged democratization of the country, the question arises as to what extent these structures have survived. Barbara Schröter examines this by analyzing the three relevant political parties—PRI, PAN, and PRD—in their interactions with the electorate, taking into account potential path dependency and highlighting reasons for the existence and transformation of clientelism. To what extent does the PRI still follow the clientelist path? Can the PRD build itself as a democratic counter-project? And is the PAN capable of escaping a clientelist environment?.
