The sciences have evidently lost their unity in their increasing autonomy as a subsystem of society and in their growing differentiation into ever smaller specialized fields. No one can keep up with the explosive increase in internationally produced scientific literature, even for a single discipline or area of study. This flood of publications results from a frantic busyness, where quantifiable publications can be more important for careers and funding allocations than actual knowledge and insight gains. There is no absolute truth in any science. Knowledge is always tentative, as it can be erroneous, and thus has only provisional value. Significant dangers for both the sciences and society lurk because criticism and verification of research findings are lacking even within individual disciplines.
