Product details
Scandals make norm violations visible on a large scale, generating public outrage over alleged misconduct and revealing the rules of discursive and performative practice in the process. Scandals expand discourses. Thus, a private matter can become a public event, or an artistic provocation can turn into a political issue. What is considered scandalous appears to be historically and, not least, media-driven: only through a violation of a prevailing taboo and within the framework of mass media dissemination can a scandal fully unfold and become a scandal at all. The contributions in this volume approach the phenomenon of the modern scandal using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Starting from case analyses, they consider the recurrence of structures and economies, as well as the strategies and mechanisms of scandals in politics.
