Current settlement structures lead to new and diverse forms of social neighborhoods. These increasingly diverge from the image of anonymous coexistence and the picture of close interpersonal relationships found in rural areas. Changed mobility and networking opportunities also contribute to the fact that significant personal relationships are less and less confined to the immediate neighborhood, and the network of personal relationships is spatially broad. At the same time, the local vicinity in terms of architectural neighborhoods is still attributed high importance. The book embarks on a quest for concepts and history of neighborhoods, situates them within current theoretical discourses on community, and opens up perspectives for neighbors with the concept of social neighborhoods.
