Since its beginnings, social pedagogy has existed in a tension between assistance and control, as well as between family and state. It combats social inequalities while simultaneously reproducing them in addressing social issues. The resulting difficulties and conflicts take on historically and field-specific contours, producing specific discourses and practices for legitimizing interventions. This volume examines such discourses and practices in a differentiated manner and reflects on them both theoretically and empirically.
