The integration of immigrants is a widely discussed topic – in politics, in the media, and in research. The role of citizenship in the integration process has received less attention from a scientific perspective so far. David Reichel analyzes the motives for changing citizenship as well as the socio-economic implications of naturalization in Austria. On one hand, the question is examined as to why foreign nationals wish to become citizens. The motives for naturalization point to the special significance and different levels of meaning of citizenship for foreign nationals. On the other hand, David Reichel investigates to what extent naturalization can improve the economic situation of foreign nationals. Previous research has identified significant differences in the economic situation.
