Joachim Häfele focuses on the question of the influence of urban disorder phenomena (incivilities) on public attitudes and fear of crime. This puts to the test the construct known in criminology and criminal sociology as the disorder or social control model of fear of crime, which explains the emergence of attitudes towards and fear of crime. At the same time, it examines the determinants of the perception of incivilities in the form of deviant behaviors (social incivilities) and physical disorder (physical incivilities) in urban areas. Based on a postal survey of the population (N=3612) and systematic observations (N=187) in 49 neighborhoods of Hamburg, various multilevel models were tested.
