Based on a multi-method investigation of all empirical cases from 1960 to 2007, the authors of this volume develop a model of the causes of state collapse. In 43 case studies of collapse cases and comparison cases, common quantitative indicators of fragile statehood are supplemented by the collection of qualitative factors. The comparison using QCA allows for the first time the verification of many prevalent hypotheses. By complementing the QCA analyses with process analyses, new risk factors can be identified alongside the development of the causal model, known concepts can be reformulated, and relationships between factors can be uncovered. In this way, the book contributes to a better understanding of state collapse and its causes, and opens up previously unconsidered conceptual and methodological approaches for research.
