This book argues that the ease with which a professional orchestra can rely on traditional, self-referential justifications for its existence will diminish. Instead, each professional orchestra will have to individually assess, based on its specific conditions and potentials, which strategies are sustainable for the future. It will need to decide how to interpret the signs of the times, which changes to implement, and which to forgo. Thus, each orchestra determines its own future.
