From the bottom to the top, the school system operates as if its function were not to educate, but to eliminate. Better put: To the extent that it eliminates, it succeeds in convincing the losers that they themselves are responsible for their elimination. By treating all students equally in their rights and duties, regardless of how unequal they may actually be, the school system effectively sanctions the original inequality in relation to culture. The formal equality that determines pedagogical practice actually serves as a disguise and justification for indifference to the real inequality concerning instruction and the culture conveyed or, more precisely, demanded in the classroom. Therefore, unlike our social philosophies, which always conclude with an appeal to pedagogy, I diverge.
