The Connection, originally published in German under the title "Dead Judges Don't Speak," carries the subtitle "A Parody." But as the reader quickly suspects, it is anything but humorous. Was Prosecutor Varga murdered because he had been particularly relentless in representing the public prosecution in the Reis trial? The Minister of Police assigns the sharpest investigator, Inspector Rogas, to restore public trust in the police or to convince them of the case's unsolvability. Hardly has Rogas begun his investigations when Judge Sanza—also found with a bullet in his heart—is discovered. Was this murder meant to distract from the first, or did the two perhaps have something to do with each other? While Rogas continues his investigation, Judge Azar is murdered. The government is convinced that the perpetrator is a madman.
