The Greeks regarded the Persians as uncultured barbarians—out of pure jealousy and feelings of competition, as they often found themselves inferior. Nevertheless, this classification continues to shape our historical perspective to this day. Iran, however, is a world empire of the spirit with unprecedented diversity and lasting significance. Early on, a sophisticated trade system, a differentiated religion, and a rich literature developed there. The country's prominent geographical position between two continents historically led to a strong influence on Europe and Central Asia. The author embarks on a fascinating journey through the history of this underestimated cultural nation, allowing us to witness both the rise and fall of dynasties as well as the groundbreaking upheavals, such as the great revolution of 1979 under Khomeini. Through many examples—such as the status of women, the highly developed culture, and political changes—the complexity and significance of Iran become evident.
