Grace, diligence, beauty, humility - with this characterization, Vasari begins the biography of Raphael, one of the most extensive lives. Born in Urbino and orphaned at an early age, Raphael began his apprenticeship with Perugino as a child, later working with Pinturicchio in Siena, where he abandoned everything to study two canvases by Michelangelo and Leonardo. The Pope summoned him to Rome for his first major work: the decoration of the Stanze in the Vatican. In Rome, he lived sociably like a prince and died, after indulgent pleasures, at the age of 37. Alongside many anecdotes, Vasari also dedicates a separate section to Raphael's method - the "Manner of Perugino" as well as the overwhelming influence of Michelangelo's nudes and the new treatment of perspective.
