Product details

Donatello is the exception and the test case for Vasari's history of Renaissance artists, as his sculptures are far ahead of their time and are comparable in their liveliness and grace to the masterpieces of antiquity – the highest praise that Vasari can bestow. Only his contemporaries, such as Michelangelo, who lived nearly a hundred years after Donatello, come close. In short, Donatello transcends the carefully developed hierarchical sequence of art periods established by Vasari. Today’s viewers delight in his delicate Annunciation in Florence and the so-called Madonna Pazzi in the Bode Museum in Berlin. A special case is also the biography of the sculptor and architect Michelozzo, which Vasari primarily uses as a backdrop for his own architectural achievements and his relationship with Duke Cosimo de' Medici. It remains unclear how many works Michelozzo actually created.
