The literary magazine "Akzente," published by Carl Hanser Verlag since 1954, has understood itself from its inception as a magazine without a program and as a platform for promoting young talents: Hans Magnus Enzensberger made his debut in "Akzente," Günter Grass published there as a young author and was significantly supported by editor Walter Höllerer, and Ingeborg Bachmann was an "Akzente" author from the very first issue. The magazine became a seismograph of literary movements, from émigrés to representatives of an "inner emigration," through Group 47 to advocates of radical aesthetic and literary theoretical positions. It also played a central role in the introduction of foreign literature in the Federal Republic. The comprehensive study by Susanne Krones is based on the "Akzente" correspondence of editors Walter Höllerer, Hans Bender, and Michael Krüger—nearly 100,000 letters, strategy papers, and protocols exchanged between Carl Hanser Verlag, the "Akzente" editorial team, and many hundreds of authors from German-speaking and international literature.
