Product details
How, 150 years ago, the foundations for the modern art form "series" were laid in the family magazine "Die Gartenlaube." "Die Gartenlaube" was the mass medium of the 19th century. It showcased the popular culture of the bourgeois age. Even contemporary critics acknowledged the magazine's enormous influence on the public life of the emerging German nation. This success was not least due to the virtuoso handling of seriality, which made "series" visible as a network of individuals, institutions, objects, and technologies produced through division of labor, organizing the attention of recipients to this day. Therefore, "Die Gartenlaube" illustrates how prerequisite-laden seriality is—what seems common to us today developed gradually, through long-term processes of trial and error, into what is established.
