Around 1900, numerous women in Berlin collected and promoted fine arts. With her examination of this artistic patronage, Anna-Carolin Augustin reveals a little-known facet of the art metropolis Berlin. At that time, many women in Berlin established art collections, supported artists, and various art styles. The repertoire ranged from Van Gogh paintings to Japanese woodblock prints and folk art objects. In doing so, these women made an important and now almost forgotten contribution to the development of Berlin as an art metropolis. Anna-Carolin Augustin addresses this topic at the intersection of art history, elite history, gender history, and Jewish history. Through archival materials, magazines, correspondence, and diaries, she unfolds a panorama of Berlin women's biographies, art collections, and foundations, and provides analysis.
