The Sylvestriana complements the edition of the Bonstettiana with previously unpublished correspondence of the Geneva physician's daughter Espérance Sylvestre (1790-1842) with three representatives of the late Goethe circle in Weimar: Goethe's "Urfreund" Karl Ludwig von Knebel, Goethe's collaborator Johann Peter Eckermann, and Goethe's estate administrator, State Chancellor Friedrich von Müller. The 200 letters from these relationships date from 1818 to 1842. During this period, the staunch republican Sylvestre educated the Weimar princesses Marie and Augusta (later Augusta, German Empress) for a decade, and later served as governess to a daughter of the Russian Minister of Public Enlightenment Uvarov until her marriageable age. In the meantime, from 1829 to 1832, she was Bonstetten's last partner, his "Speranza." She was involved with him as well as in the Goethe circle and the circle of friends of Pushkin.
