At the center of this edition are the letters that Gertrud Kolmar wrote to her sister Hilde Wenzel, who had emigrated to Switzerland, from September 1938 until her deportation to Auschwitz in March 1943. She describes the increasingly difficult and ultimately hopeless situation of the last Jews in Berlin and provides her sister with comprehensive and often coded insights into her experiences, her work, and her memories. In particular, the last letters before her deportation read like a conscious legacy from the poet. In addition to the letters to her sister, the volume includes the few surviving early letters to Jacob Picard and Walter Benjamin. Furthermore, this volume presents for the first time the newly discovered letters and postcards to the actress and writer Leni Steinberg. Gertrud Kolmar's letters are not only a unique testimony of the times.
