In the darkest days of World War I, a new academic network formed with a lofty goal: a cross-border female educational elite was to advocate for the understanding of nations while simultaneously promoting their own scientific advancement on an international scale. The book reconstructs, using Germany as an example, how the American and British initiators of the International Federation of University Women (IFUW) managed to implement their dual mission not only across the trenches of the past war but also under the dramatic economic and political conditions of the following decades. A particularly significant role is played by the time of National Socialism, during which the IFUW prioritized academic refuge assistance for female colleagues from Germany and its expanding sphere of influence.
