Following his literary "No" of 1916 ("Dada") and the political reckoning of 1919 ("Critique of German Intellectuals"), Hugo Ball presented a historically argumentative redefinition of his position in 1923 with his book "Byzantine Christianity." This oddly cumbersome work was met with widespread head-shaking and incomprehension from Christian theologians and even bore scandalous traits for well-meaning friends. Literary research would later also turn away from this text. The subtitle chosen by Ball—at the suggestion of Hermann Hesse—which seems to categorize the book within the common Catholic hagiography, further contributed to the work's largely forgotten status. The extensively annotated new edition also takes into account Ball's unpublished diaries from the time of its creation for the first time.
