From the Weimar Republic to the post-war years: The correspondence of an intellectual friendship. Hermann Broch was already in his mid-forties when he published the first volume of his "Sleepwalkers" trilogy in 1930. In Vienna, he met Frank Thiess in 1928, one of the most successful writers of the Weimar Republic. Thiess was fascinated by "Pasenow or the Romanticism" and reviewed it in Willy Haas's "Literarische Welt." A friendship developed that solidified during the interwar period and proved resilient even after 1945. Their long-standing correspondence is marked by openness in critiquing each other's books and reflects a time full of political and social upheaval. Between 1933 and 1938, they attempted to support each other, discussing their views on National Socialism, but soon found common ground in their rejection of it.
