Product details

A carefully edited volume of sources featuring predominantly unpublished texts and documents. The Goethe House and the Goethe Museum at Frauenplan in Weimar are primary sites of remembrance, and even more so: places of identity in German history. The Goethe House, once a place of longing for a conservative, apolitical educated bourgeoisie, was expanded in 1935 into a Goethe Museum after persistent efforts to attract the attention of Adolf Hitler, which is now considered the first museum built by the National Socialist state. Shortly thereafter, following the founding of the German Democratic Republic, the Weimar Goethe Museum rose to become the largest literature museum of the socialist state with new permanent exhibitions. It was, in its various forms, connected to the deformation of educational ideals in both the National Socialist and socialist states, influencing both cases.
