Product details

Joseph Roth was one of the most respected feuilletonists in the German-speaking world during the Weimar Republic. In addition to his reports, travel articles, book reviews, and theater critiques written for the most important German-language publications, he also established himself as a film critic. In the nearly one hundred texts, some published in book form for the first time in this volume, there is a wealth of very different perspectives on the phenomenon of cinema: Roth writes about film premieres, engages with "cinematic drama," visits filming locations, and reports on the film industry and the newly emerging cult of celebrity. The cinematic offerings of the Weimar era are critically examined, as are later classics of the silent film genre, such as "The Last Laugh" by Alfred Murnau or Fritz Lang's "Nibelungen" - snapshots from the early days of the film medium, created during a transitional period.
