Private Life and Political Everyday Life: The Individual Processing of National Socialism in Self-Witness Accounts of "Ordinary" People. With the onset of the National Socialist dictatorship, Germany experienced not only a profound political rupture but also a fundamental change in the private lives of its citizens. The Nazi regime had far-reaching ideas about how individuals should think and act from then on. Janosch Steuwer has examined a total of 140 diaries from the years 1933 to 1939, demonstrating how average citizens responded to the challenges of National Socialism. In reflecting on themselves and the world in which they now lived, they positioned themselves in relation to the new rulers. Some Germans felt compelled to adapt to the political circumstances, while others found themselves forced to do so. Together, they contributed to shaping the vision of a homogeneous society.
