The reports by Eugen Kogon, Hans Maralek, and Hermann Langbein about their time in the concentration camps of Buchenwald, Mauthausen, and Auschwitz were created in the 1940s and 1950s and were groundbreaking for memorial work. Carl Schrade also wrote an impressive report around 1946: he had been arrested in 1934 for critical remarks about the regime and was interned for eleven years in concentration camps: initially in Lichtenburg, Esterwegen, Sachsenhausen, and Buchenwald, and from 1939 until liberation in 1945 in the Flossenbürg concentration camp. There, he became a senior kapo in the infirmary and helped his fellow prisoners as much as he could. For instance, he was able to hide a young Polish Jew in the typhus ward, thereby saving him from the death march. During his lifetime, Schrade could not find an audience for his report. In 2010, the manuscript surfaced in the estate of a Frenchman.
