Emerging from the upheavals of the 1968 era, countless leftist publishers and bookstores sprang up across the country. With classics of Marxism and key texts of the student movement, they significantly shaped the political culture of the old Federal Republic in the 1970s. Uwe Sonnenberg examines the emergence, character, and transformation of this book trade. In doing so, the author focuses on the little-known, yet unique association of leftist booksellers (VLB). Founded in 1970, it united independent, collectively operated publishers, printing houses, distributors, and delivery services. It defined the concept and practice of this movement-oriented book trade, creating its own political-literary field and a distinct economic sector. Nationwide, between 150 and 200 projects were engaged in the VLB. Sonnenberg illustrates how the leftist bookselling companies produced their works.
