David Van Reybrouck is concerned with democratic participation. All people must engage in politics and decision-making, which is why: more populism! Better populism! Populism is often viewed negatively, especially in times of rising nationalism, yet populist movements are gaining significant traction across Europe. David Van Reybrouck, a historian and archaeologist himself, attributes this trend to an ever-widening gap between people with academic backgrounds and those from less educated backgrounds. While the academic elite sees the benefits of globalization and advocates for tolerance towards the unfamiliar, those in unskilled jobs and lower-paying positions often associate the term globalization primarily with fears, including fears of competition. In governments, non-academics or so-called ordinary people are now completely underrepresented.
