In January 1923, twenty-one-year-old Germaine Berton shot a leader of the right-wing nationalist "Action Française" and then attempted to take her own life. This political murder shook the Third Republic and remains a controversial criminal case in France to this day. The young woman had actually intended to kill the warmonger, monarchist, and anti-Semite Léon Daudet, in order to avenge the death of the socialist and pacifist Jean Jaurès, who had been murdered in the summer of 1914. She saw the nationalist warmongers as the true culprits behind the great slaughter. The trial turned into a political tribunal and ended with an acquittal.
