Product details

Hugo von Hofmannsthal (1874-1929) aimed to be the representative of a new culture, which he constructed against the existing, eclectically disintegrating values and traditions of historicism. The unity of this culture, for which he takes Goethe as a model, he can no longer artistically create in his works. He suggests it and must enchant his audience as well as, in a broader sense, the research community. Hofmannsthal directs his own reception by incorporating the knowledge and terms of the scholars of his time. He connects to an old tradition of linking poetry and science, which he updates for his modernity. This process, in which Hofmannsthal acts both as a poet and as a philologist - serving as a medium between his art, science, and his readers - is uncovered by König, who critically interprets Hofmannsthal's "Autophilology" for the first time.
