New perspectives on the bourgeoisie in the "Third Reich" and beyond. The failure of the German bourgeoisie to confront the challenges of National Socialism seems evident at first glance. Upon closer inspection, however, the diagnosis is less clear-cut and raises questions about the resilience of bourgeois values as well as specific strategies for appropriating and reinterpreting the National Socialist project. The contributors to this volume therefore inquire into the expectations of bourgeois milieus around 1930, the processes and practices of denationalization in the "Third Reich," and the integration into an anti-bourgeois "people's community." Particularly during the war years, it also addresses the semantics of the bourgeois and their transformation, bourgeois spaces, niches, and counter-sites, and ultimately, bourgeois opposition to the regime.
