Oskar Rosenfeld wrote these lines in May 1942 in light of the deportation of Jews from the Litzmannstadt ghetto to the extermination camp Kulmhof in his diary. Numerous Jews documented their experiences to ensure that life and death in the ghetto would not be forgotten. The Jewish ghetto administration even established an archive to collect these records.
