Product details

Ludwig Hohl only found the recognition he deserved in his later years. His fragmented thinking, exploring the spaces and edges of consciousness, is remarkably modern, developed in the 1920s and 1930s out of a sense of rootlessness. Anna Stüssi's biography places this period at the center. The young Hohl escapes the confines of Switzerland, first to Paris's Montparnasse. Restlessly, he travels further into the Alps, to Marseille, Vienna, and finally to quiet The Hague, where he experiences a breakthrough to his own unique form of thought. When he returns to Switzerland in 1937 due to financial hardship, he brings with him his nearly completed work: a thousand pages of notes. Anna Stüssi has drawn from mostly unpublished sources. The result is a sensitive portrait of a man who suffers from himself, from friends and loved ones, and from the threatening times.
