"Nachtwachen. Von Bonaventura" - under this title, a book was published anonymously in 1804, which was rediscovered in the last third of the 19th century and has been reprinted in various editions since 1877. Among the presumed authors were Schelling, E.T.A. Hoffmann, and Brentano. It was not until 1973 that Jost Schillemeit definitively identified the Braunschweig writer and theater director August Klingemann as the author. Klingemann is also the author of the small satirical play "Freimüthigkeiten," which was published anonymously and clearly resembles the "Nachtwachen" in tone, style, and content. Both texts follow the wording, spelling, and punctuation of the first editions and are accompanied by a foreword and notes by Jost Schillemeit.
