The diorama, as an illusionistic presentation, often serves to create a context for exhibition objects. This volume highlights the surprisingly vast variety of dioramic forms for the first time across different disciplines: the authors analyze not only their long history through well-known examples from natural history and ethnology but also demonstrate how archaeological, technical, and natural science museums and collections engage with the potentials of dioramas. The surprising diversity of dioramic forms is examined representatively through the example of the German Museum in Munich. The discussion includes both the scientific and practical challenges in conception and construction, as well as the central questions of authenticity, imitation, and didactics that many museums face.
