Arnold Beer is a young man who wants to organize an air show in Prague, inspired by the air show in Brescia that Brod and Kafka attended together. He raises money and builds wooden stalls. The unassuming Lina, a Bohemian German Christian girl who assists him as a secretary, falls in love with him. He rejects her, but cannot do without her help. Eventually, what must happen occurs: she seduces him, a beautiful variation in the seductive stories rich in Brod's romantic novels. At the end of the novel, Arnold visits his grandmother in the countryside: a peculiar and wonderful woman who hardly lets her grandson speak in her Bohemian German, heavily sprinkled with Yiddish. The world of Prague's German Jewry, which some readers seek in Kafka, can be found in Max Brod. The volume also includes the short novel.
