The new volume within the Critical Complete Edition: the first book with which Hannah Arendt addressed the German public in 1948. Three years after the end of the war, fifteen years after her escape from Germany, Hannah Arendt's "Six Essays" were published. "It is not easy for a Jew to publish in Germany today," it states on the first page. Although Arendt wrote the collected texts in her mother tongue, they are written from the perspective of exile. They outline a "hidden tradition," in which the voices of Heinrich Heine and Franz Kafka, Bernard Lazare and Stefan Zweig can be heard. They confront readers in post-war Germany with "Organized Guilt" for crimes that no one wanted to take responsibility for after the war. It was not until 1976, six months after Arendt's death, that this significant book could finally be published.
