The three cycles of poems by Karl Wolfskehl that have had the strongest impact to this day represent the quintessence of his work in European and New Zealand exile. Their valid form occupied Wolfskehl until the end of his life. The voice, published for the first time in 1934, gave a poignant poetic expression to the process of self-discovery with which many Jews in Germany reacted to the exclusion by the National Socialists. As a counterpart, Wolfskehl wrote the first versions of the great poem An die Deutschen, which particularly addressed the members of the George Circle and with which he distanced himself as a Jew from a Germany that betrayed its own spiritual heritage. The cycle Hiob oder Die Vier Spiegel, composed in the last years of the poet's life, was regarded by Wolfskehl himself as a highlight of his work.
