Product details

The Theosophical Society was the most culturally influential esoteric institution of the early 20th century. Its teachings blended elements of Indian religions and European occultism into a religiously grounded worldview that particularly resonated with artists, intellectuals, and social elites. The historical impact of Theosophy also shapes the history of the circle surrounding the poet Stefan George. This influence is evident in the symbolism used by George's book designer Melchior Lechter in the publications of the circle, as well as in the membership register of the Theosophical Society, which lists Lechter along with Karl Wolfskehl and other followers of George. While contemporaries like Ernst Bloch attempted to reconcile George with Theosophy, George himself began to define the ideological identity of his circle through programmatic differentiation starting in 1910.
