The therapeutic decade

Product details
Around 1970, a wave of popularization of psychological knowledge and psychotherapeutic practices emerged in the Federal Republic of Germany. Scientific and popular non-fiction books on the topics of psychology, psychoanalysis, and psychotherapy flooded the market in increasing numbers and editions, with hundreds of thousands participating in therapy and self-experience groups. Maik Tändler reconstructs the complex scientific, cultural, and political conditions of emergence and the societal dynamics of this psychoboom. It becomes evident that this phenomenon cannot be reduced to fringe psychosects or a depoliticized new inner life. Rather, it was an overarching societal development that was significantly driven by the socio-political promises of the 1968 era: the rapid spread of psychological-therapeutic approaches.
