Product details

While Albert Vigoleis Thelen experienced all that would later take literary form in his "Insel des zweiten Gesichts" on Mallorca, he even found time to write literary critiques. These were published under the pseudonym Leopold Fabrizius in the Dutch newspaper Het Vaderland, translated by the prominent Dutch literati Menno ter Braak, who took his own life in 1940 during the German invasion. Thelen exclusively reviewed books in German that were not published within Germany; in short, he was responsible for what is now referred to as exile literature. The list of reviewed books is 143 titles long, ranging from Shalom Asch's "Gesang des Tales" to Stefan Zweig's "Ungeduld des Herzens." The forty articles were published between 1934 and 1940, while Thelen was already living in Portugal. Albert Vigoleis Thelen was born - without his Vigoleis - on September 28, 1903, in Süchteln on the Lower Rhine. In 1931, he went to Mallorca with his later wife Beatrice, where he found the Vigoleis that he immortalized in his "Insel des zweiten Gesichts." Due to the Spanish Civil War, he fled to Portugal in 1939, where he lived until 1947. After stays in Holland and Switzerland, he returned to the Lower Rhine in 1986, where he passed away on April 9, 1989, in Dülken. The editor Erhard Louven (born 1938), a distant relative of Thelen, who was in close contact with him during his last years, is a professor of Modern China at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and lives in Kempen on the Lower Rhine.
