The mother is fourteen years old when she is arrested in 1945 and taken to the Polish labor camp Potulice for years. The reason: she signed a form at the age of nine that identified her as German in an area invaded by Hitler. Susanne Fritz movingly recounts the fate of her mother and the entire family over several generations without any hasty accusations of guilt. She questions humanity and betrayal, identity and language, and continually refers to historical documents. In doing so, she not only illuminates her own family history but also the German-Polish relationship across two world wars, along with all the historical upheavals and their effects on each individual.
