The printed book has long been regarded as the most important medium for humanities research. However, in recent years, a whole structure of media, values, and practices has come into motion. With the possibilities of digital research and communication, as well as demands for the standardization of publications, the writing and printing of books sometimes seems almost like an anachronism with a limited lifespan. Criticism of the printed book reveals a piece of cultural critique that connects discomfort with the present to an exaggerated expectation of the technical possibilities of the digital. Instead of highlighting the different strengths of paper and digital formats and exploring where potential synergies might lie, a rival opposition between the two is postulated, demanding a decision.
