Product details

Violence, sexuality, and love during World War II - the long-silenced side of the German occupation. During World War II, Wehrmacht soldiers, SS men, and police officers stationed in Poland from 1939 were prohibited from having any contact with local women, as they were considered "racially inferior." Nevertheless, there were numerous sexual encounters. Some were consensual, while others were marked by brutal violence, and often women sold their bodies to survive. Maren Röger, a historian at the German Historical Institute in Warsaw, vividly describes these interactions and outlines the measures taken by the Wehrmacht and SS: while brothels were specifically established, romantic relationships were often strictly punished. Maren Röger provides new insights into the everyday life of the occupation, Nazi racial policies, and the difficult fates of the affected women.
