Initially, we grew up carefree in the 1940s, lying in cotton diapers in our strollers and being driven through the Biebrich Palace Park. With the war, the supply situation worsened, and the fear of air raids added to our worries. In March 1945, with the arrival of the Allies in Wiesbaden, the war came to an end for us. Gradually, things started to improve again. We went to the Palast-Lichtspiele, the Opelbad, and Café Blum. With petticoats, ponytails, and hairdos, we imitated our idols Brigitte Bardot and Elvis Presley. When we finally held our apprenticeship contracts or high school diplomas in our hands, we felt truly grown-up.
